لەسەر گیراوانی بادینان

لە کەمپینێکیان لەسەر کەیسی زیندانییانی بادینان، ٤٢ کەس لە چین و توێژە جیاوازەکانی وڵاتی کەنەدا، لە نامەیەکی کراوەدا داوا لە دەسەڵاتدارانی ھەرێمی کوردستان دەکەن، ئو تۆمەتە ناڕاست و نا یاساییانە بکێشنەوە و ڕێز لە بنەماکانی مافی مرۆڤ بگرن.

دیاری خالید، یەکێک لە ئامادەکارانی کەمپینەکە، ڕایگەیاند " ژمارەیەک لە واژۆکەرانی نامەکە، مامۆستای زانکۆن و ھەندێکیانش ڕۆژنامەنوسی دیاری کەنەدان و چەندین شانۆکار و ڕۆماننوسی دیاری تێدایە". گوتیشی " سەرجەم ئەوانەی واژۆیان کردوە، ھاوڵاتی کەنەدین و لەو بوارەی کاری تێدا دەکەن خاوەن پێگە و قورسایی". دیاری ئاماژەی بەوە کرد، کە ژمارەیەک لە بەشداربوانی کەمپینەکە، لە ئەککاونت و پەیجەکانیان لە تۆڕەکۆمەڵایەتییەکانییان، بە نوسین و لایڤ قسەیان لەسەر کەیسی بادینان کردوە و ئەو پێشێلکاریانەیان ئیدانە کردووە".

لە ناوەرۆکی نامەکە، کە ئاراستەی ھەریەک لە نێچیرڤان بارزانی سەرۆکی ھەرێمی کوردستان و مەسرور بارزانی سەرۆکی حکومەتی ھەرێم کراوە، ناوی ھەر یەک لە شێروان شێروانی و ئەیاز ئەکرەم ھاتوە وەکو دوو نمونەی زۆر زەقی پێشێلکاری و ئاماژە بەوە دەکەن , کە ھەرەشەکردن لە ھاوسەری شێروان شێروانی و لێسەندنەوەی ناسنامەی باری شارستانی عێراقی لە ئەیاز ئەکرەم دوو چیرۆکن ئاماژە بە ھەڵکشانی میحنەتەکانی ڕۆژنامەنوسان لە ھەرێمی کوردستان دەکەن، دەشڵێن " ھەموو جیھان ئومێدی ئەوەی لە ھەرێمی کوردستان دەکرد کە ببێتە پێشەنگی ئازادی و دادوەری لە عێراق و ڕۆژھەڵاتی ناوەڕاست، کەچی بەداخەوە ئێستا ھەموو جیھان چاودێری سەرکوتییەکانی دەسەلاتدارانی ئەوێ دەکات"

An open letter from academics, artists, and journalists

Dear the president and prime minister of Kurdistan Regional government

According to sources, in October 2020, Asayesh (Kurdistan security forces) raided and detained five journalists and activists. On February 16th 2021, they were sentenced for six years on the charges of “destabilizing national security and espionage. This unjust scenario brought to light serious concerns about the increasing threat of freedom of press and human rights both in Iraqi Kurdistan and the globe at large.

We, as a group of Canadian writers, artists, and academics strongly believe that freedom of journalism and freedom of expression are crucial aspects that contribute to the dignity and respect for humanity. For these key reasons, we highly condemn the injustice of the unlawful imprisonment of these five journalists and activists. Freedom of press is a fundamental human right which promotes equality and progressive thinking. The injustice of these imprisonments has completely reversed democracy in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and propelled the country back into fascism.

For many years, the people of Iraqi Kurdistan hoped their government would uphold their promises of democracy and freedom of speech and press in the Middle East. The Erbil criminal court verdict shocked and appalled the people of Kurdistan long-held belief that your government would protect their fundamental human rights.

Sherwan Sherwani, one of the imprisoned journalists, claimed that Asayesh threatened to sexually assault his wife if he did not confess to the false charges, they imposed against him. Ayaz Karim, another convicted journalist, was forcefully and unlawfully stripped of his national identity document. These two stories further illuminate the escalating plight of journalists and activists in Iraqi Kurdistan.

The world was hoping that the KRG would become a beacon of freedom and justice not only for Iraq, but for the rest of Middle East. But unfortunately, the whole world is watching the crackdown of democracy and freedom of speech through this injustice court.

We urgently demand for the withdrawal of these false and unlawful charges against these journalists and activists and their release in accordance with fundamental human rights that you promised your people.
