Thank you for contacting me about the situation of journalists in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI). I apologise for the delay in responding to this and your other email regarding human rights in the KRI, this is due to the large volume of coronavirus related enquiries.

I am deeply concerned to hear about the conviction of five journalists in the KRI, and the jail sentences they have received. I understand that Sherwan Sherwani is one of the five journalists and activists convicted and has received six years in jail. Sherwan Sherwani was found guilty of damaging the KRI’s national security, however his lawyer has described the case as politically motivated, particularly as leading politicians described the groups as spies even before the trial. I believe that cases such as these set a dangerous precedent.

This recent case is one example in a worrying trend of declining press freedoms in the KRI. Journalists have frequently been abused, assaulted and detained whilst doing their jobs, and as you say, some have even lost their lives. Additionally, broadcasting bans and the closing down of local networks represent grave threats to press freedom.

I believe that freedom of expression and press freedom are universal rights which must be protected. Press freedom is fundamental to any democratic society and vital to hold those in authority to account. Journalists must be free from intimidation, arbitrary punishments, and physical harm.

I will press the UK Government to engage with the administration of the KRI and promote press freedoms and freedom of expression as part of the foundations of any democratic society.
